SpaceIL, an Israeli non-profit, developed the Beresheet lunar lander and achieved the first privately funded spacecraft to orbit the Moon.
ACTIVESpaceIL is an Israeli non-profit that built Beresheet, which entered lunar orbit on 4 April 2019 and crashed during its landing attempt on 11 April 2019. Work on its follow-on Beresheet 2 mission was suspended in April 2025 for lack of funding, while its education programs continue.
SpaceIL is an Israeli non-profit organization that developed the Beresheet lunar lander, the first privately funded spacecraft to orbit the Moon. Originally formed to compete in the Google Lunar X Prize, SpaceIL continued its mission after the competition ended. Beresheet launched in February 2019 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9, successfully entered lunar orbit, but experienced a main engine failure during landing and crashed on the Moon's surface. Despite the landing failure, Beresheet demonstrated that a small non-profit could reach the Moon for a fraction of traditional mission costs. SpaceIL is now developing Beresheet 2, a more ambitious follow-up mission.
