How Much Does a Space Burial Cost?
Short answer: The launch mass is almost nothing: cremated remains fly as symbolic samples of a few grams, and at the $7,000 per kilogram SpaceX rideshare rate a gram costs $7 to launch, ten grams $70. Memorial operators quote far more than that per participant, and the difference is not the rocket. They buy or share a rideshare slot (SpaceX's minimum is $350k for 50 kg), then build or lease a host spacecraft, machine and seal the individual capsules, run the integration campaign and stage a launch-day ceremony for families. Price also tracks the destination: an Earth-orbit flight that re-enters after years, a suborbital flight that returns the capsule, or a deep-space flight that never comes back.

Price by option
| Option | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| One gram of remains at the rideshare rate | $7 | Pure arithmetic on the per-kilogram rate; no one sells a gram |
| Ten grams at the rideshare rate | $70 | Symbolic samples are gram-scale; the container weighs more than the contents |
| A 1U-sized shared memorial capsule (1.33 kg) | ~$9,310 | The launch mass of a small host container carrying many participants |
| Rideshare minimum an operator must buy or share (50 kg) | $350k | Usually shared with other payloads through a broker |
| What memorial providers quote per participant | Quoted per package | Operators quote by destination (Earth orbit, suborbital return, deep space); the capsule, host spacecraft, integration and ceremony are the product |
The costs that are not on the price list
- The host spacecraft: the remains ride inside a satellite or a canister on someone else's spacecraft, and that hardware is the bulk of the bill.
- Individual capsules and the paperwork: engraving, sealing, chain of custody and the launch site's handling rules.
- The ceremony and travel: families gather at the launch site, and scrubs can push that by days.
- Destination: an Earth-orbit memorial re-enters after a few years; deep-space flights need more rocket and are priced accordingly.
- Launch risk: if the rocket fails, most providers offer a re-flight, which is built into the price.
Frequently asked
How much of a person's ashes go to space?
A symbolic sample of a gram or a few grams in a small sealed capsule, not the full remains. The mass is trivial; the capsule and its host spacecraft are what fly.
Do the remains come back?
It depends on the flight. Suborbital memorial flights return the capsule to the family; Earth-orbit flights re-enter and burn up after some years in orbit; deep-space and lunar flights do not return.
Why does it cost so much more than $7 a gram?
Because the per-kilogram rate is a wholesale price for a 50 kg minimum, and a memorial flight is a spacecraft, a capsule, an integration campaign and a ceremony wrapped around a few grams. Operators quote the package, not the mass.
